Saginaw Township Community Schools (STCS) is proud to announce the initiation of a transformative energy conservation project aimed at improving the student learning environment, enhancing sustainability, and optimizing operational efficiency across the district. Slated to begin in June 2026, this project encompasses the implementation of an energy management system, LED lighting upgrades, HVAC control enhancements, bathroom renovations, and water conservation measures. It underscores STCS’s commitment to find alternative funding for infrastructure improvements, all at no additional tax increase to the residents.

The district is projected to save over $7 million in energy conservation over the life of the project, which will not only cover the cost of the projects, but will allow for reinvestment into educational resources and programs.  Additionally, this energy conservation project will combine with sinking fund dollars and has the potential to run in parallel with a community approved bond proposal.  This will effectively stretch all three funding sources (energy savings project, sinking fund, and potential bond) to maximize efficiency and improve the learning environment for students, while being fiscally responsible with the community’s money.

Key Components of the Project:

             • Energy Management System: The district will install a state-of-the-art energy management system that will monitor and control energy consumption across all school facilities. This system will provide real-time data, helping to identify inefficiencies, guide strategic energy-saving initiatives and future capital projects.

             • LED Lighting Upgrades: In an effort to reduce electricity usage and improve lighting quality, STCS will replace traditional lighting fixtures with energy-efficient LED lights in classrooms, hallways, and outdoor areas. This upgrade is expected to significantly decrease energy costs while enhancing the learning environment for students.

             • HVAC Control Upgrades: The project includes upgrading heating, ventilation, and the potential for air conditioning to be added at a later date (HVAC).  These controls will enhance comfort and energy efficiency and will allow for more precise temperature regulation. This will reduce energy waste while maintaining optimal indoor conditions conducive to learning.

             • Water Conservation Measures:  STCS is committed to preserving water resources by installing low-flow fixtures and implementing water-saving practices throughout the district.  These measures will not only conserve water but also reduce utility costs associated with water consumption.  With the water conservation upgrades, STCS will also contribute sinking fund dollars to upgrade select bathrooms throughout the district.

It is important to note that this type of funding can only be used for these types of projects.

“We continue to actively pursue alternative funding solutions and are proud to have delivered on that commitment through our energy conservation project,” said Superintendent Jamie Kraatz. “While this funding is limited, it has allowed us to shape a bond request that is more focused, more efficient, and more closely aligned with the priorities our community has shared with us.”

STCS is dedicated to keeping the community informed and engaged throughout the project’s implementation.  Updates will be communicated through the district’s website, newspaper and social media channels.
