The Saginaw Township Community Schools Board of Education has approved placing a $169.2 million bond proposal on the November 4, 2025 ballot, after the proposal was approved by the Michigan Treasury. If approved by voters, the bond will finance improvements at all eight school district facilities.
The comprehensive bond proposal is designed to make necessary upgrades and renovations across the school district, that exceed the scope and funds of our sinking fund. The bond proposal requires a 2.85 mill tax increase which will cost the Saginaw Township Community School District homeowner in a $100,000 home (for example) with a taxable value of $50,000, $142.50 per year, or $11.88 per month. Some homeowners may pay less if they qualify for the Michigan Homestead Credit.
District Superintendent Jamie Kraatz said, “Most of our school buildings are more than 60 years old, including Hemmeter Elementary at 85 years old. In two of our elementary schools, the classrooms don’t have walls or doors, which, beyond presenting a variety of safety issues, impacts our students’ ability to concentrate on learning. The cost and scope is a direct response to the feedback we heard from families, educators and community members.”
The bond proposal is designed to fund upgrades and renovations that go beyond the scope and available funds of the district’s existing Sinking Fund. These include attending to aging facility needs that have been deferred for years, such as entranceway access improvements, bathroom renovations, HVAC system overhauls, classroom modifications, and other critical infrastructure projects.
Key areas of improvement would:
● Enhanced safety and security features across all schools
● Improved classroom and learning environments to support modern instruction
● Long-overdue facility infrastructure improvements inside and outside school buildings
● Upgrades/fixes to basic athletic facilities to ensure student health and safety
The district will include a comprehensive breakdown of planned improvements at each school building on the bond section of the website. Community forums and informational sessions will be held to answer questions and share how the bond would support current and future Saginaw Township students.
