2007 STCS Foundation Grants

This year the Foundation awarded ten grants totaling $7872. Congratulations to our following winners who brought many wonderful projects to our schools.

Project: Color of Water Initiative
Recipients: Colleen Carty, Cathi Kerns, Linda Perry and Chris Tiderington
School: Community Education
Amount: $500
Note: This program is for low income students to have supervised experiences of academic and social value.

Project: Reading - The MP3 Way
Recipient: Marsha Eckerman
School: Heritage
Amount: $511
Note: This program is designed to encourage reluctant readers to read by giving them exposure to authors using MP3 books.

 

Project: Language and Literacy Library
Recipients: Celeste Gerard, Debbie Myczkowiak, Kim Papst and Julie Vondette
School: White Pine
Amount: $500
Note: This grant will purchase children's literatue that promote language development and support student literacy skills.

Project: Talent Development Program Video
Recipient: Ron Helmer
School: Hemmeter
Amount: $667
Note: This will help with the expenses of a commercial quality video about the Talent Development program fior the gifted and talented.

Project: My Home Town: a Third Grade Study of Saginaw
Recipients: Amy Huebsch, Barbara Huston and Ruth Jakes

School: Arrowwood
Amount: $500
Note: Students will take pictures of public buildings, rivers, parks and recreational places. They will document interesting facts about the location and build models.

 

Project: KNOTS (Kids Need Opportunities to Socialize
Recipient: Amy Idzior
School: Arrowwood
Amount: $1000
Note: This peer mentor program educates over 1,000 general education students about special needs in hopes to decrease bullying issues for students with special needs.

Project: Active Readers Succeed
Recipient: Antoinette Kern
School: Sherwood
Amount: $500
Note: The funds will go toward purchasing materials and high quality picture books.

 

Project: Hands-On Organiztions of Living Things and Ecosystems
Recipient: John Kowalski
School: White Pine
Amount: $500
Note: This money will help pay expenses for the workshop, Hands-On Organizations of Living Things and Ecosystems held at SVSU's Math and Science Center.

Project: WEB: Where Everybody Belongs
Recipient: Kimberly Pugh
School: White Pine
Amount: $500
Note: This program will train 8th graders to hold activity based orientation for all incoming 6th graders. The goal is to make the transition from the elementary school to middle school a positive one.

Project: Cup Stacking Kit
Recipient: Kevin Reed
School: Traveling Elementary PE
Amount: $371
Note: This is an activity to improve eye-hand coordination, ambidexterity, quickness and concentration by stacking cups in specific patterns.

 

Project: Cultural Arts at White Pine
Recipients: Cathy Agnew, Joe Madison, Jack Cleveland, Catherine McMichael
School: STCS Foundation Cultural Arts Committee
Amount: $611
Note: This program will bus 530 fifth grade students to White Pine to introduce them to elective classes in the visual and performing arts at the middle school level. Mini concerts were performed by the band, chorus and strings orchestra.

American Democracy Grants:

Project: The Constitutional Convention
Recipient: Marsha Eckerman
School: Heritage High School
Amount: $511
Note: Funds were used to purchase books on the American Revoklution that are specifically related to the original colonies. Students will use the books purchased to research whether it was in the colony's best interesta, economically and politically, to join the union.

Project: Colonial Festival-Prelude to the Declaration of Independence
Recipients: Kathleen Flohr-Alderton, Jennifer Gronski, and Rob Joslyn
School: White Pine
Amount: $678Note: An American Democracy Grant which is aimed at teaching about the period of time surrounding the American Revolution.
