Hemmeter is a gifted and talented magnet school with accelerated, in depth curriculum advancement for children in Kindergarten through Fifth grade. Thus, in order to attend Hemmeter, potential students need to meet a rigorous level of demonstrated ability. In general, students will need to perform in the top ten percent nationally on recognized and respected evaluations of cognitive ability and/or academic achievement.

We complete evaluations of students free of charge during the spring of each year. Additionally, often times, we accept evaluations completed by outside sources, as long as original documentation is available, and the evaluations given meet our guidelines. In general, we accept evaluations complete by school psychologists, psychologists, and trained evaluators who use high quality, most recently published evaluations of academic achievement and/or cognitive ability. Examples of acceptable evaluations include, but are not limited to: NWEA; the Cognitive Abilities Test, Form 6; the Cognitive Assessment System; the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test, second edition; the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, fourth edition; the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Intelligence Scale, third edition; and the Woodcock-Johnson Scales of Achievement or Ability, third edition. Additionally, performance on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, the M-STEP, or the Stanford Achievement Test Series, tenth edition, may be helpful in making placement decisions.
