Have you filled a bucket today? We are continuing our positive approach to character education with the "buckefilling" concept. Students have had a chance to read the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids. The story explains that each person carries around an invisible bucket. At the end of the day it's everyone's goal to fill someone else's bucket. When you fill someone else's bucket, you, in turn, fill your own. Students (and teachers) are filling buckets by using kind words and doing kind deeds. Staff members reinforce this concept by giving students a bucketfiller ticket which is taken by the student to the office for our weekly drawing. As explained by "Bucket People"-- "Bucket fillers" are those who help without being asked, give hugs and compliments and generally spread their love and good feelings to others. The simple metaphor of a bucket helps even preschoolers understand the importance of consideration and love, particularly towards those who bully.
"Bucket dippers" rob us of happy feelings by refusing to help with a task or by saying or doing cruel things. The challenging problem of "bucket dipping" is addressed by redirecting a student to become a bucketfiller. Parents are encouraged to promote this concept at home, too.

How can students earn "bucketfiller" tickets? See the attached matrix of behavior expectations. Students can earn tickets when they are following the 3 B rules. They can also earn bucketfiller tickets when they are showing acts of kindness to others. | ||
